Spin Zone / Rally attendence for President Trump
« on: August 12, 2019, 08:16:18 AM »
Today (12 August) the Boston Herald is reporting that President Trump "resistors" are planning to reserve seats to his NH rally and then leave the seats empty.  "I want the venue to be at least half empty".

I couldn't help but think even if these juveniles were successful in having the arena half-empty, the crowd would still be much larger than anything the democrats could put together for their clown car of candidates.

Spin Zone / "Red Flag" laws....That's it?
« on: August 10, 2019, 09:15:50 AM »
So, a number of states have so-called Red Flag laws which remove guns from people who are somehow deemed a threat to themselves or others.

All they do is take away the girl's firearms?  That's it?

If these people really are threats to themselves or others, why don't they take other actions?  Of course, that leads to questions about what else can they do?

I've read the Massachusetts law and that's all I could find in the law, but I'm not a lawyer, I don't play one on TV, and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.  Do the "Red Flag" laws in other states provide anything meaningful?

Spin Zone / Dirty Harry franchise...
« on: August 06, 2019, 04:25:45 PM »
Every once in a while I rewatch some of my DVDs.   I've just finished watching "Magnum Force" and also watching one of the special features on the DVD: "A Moral Right:  The Politics of Dirty Harry".  That special feature was produced in 2008.

It was interesting to hear those interviewed talk about divisions in American society in the early 70's, how the Harry Callahan movies shocked liberals of the time, Clint Eastwood being labelled Facist, etc etc etc.   " people use the word 'Facist' too much, they use the word 'Racist' too much.  ...they just use it as a word sometimes .... and it works because it gets people's attention.  But those words should really mean something.  You shouldn't just throw those words around"

I was struck the similarity to what's happening today.

Spin Zone / aaaaw. How sad
« on: July 20, 2019, 08:57:54 AM »
AP is reporting that Instagram is testing hiding how many "likes" a post receives.  Apparently it hurts peoples feeling when they don't receive as many likes as other people.

good grief.

Spin Zone / It's a "contribution", not a tax
« on: July 17, 2019, 10:04:36 AM »
A few months ago, Massachusetts passed a Paid Family and Medical Leave Act (175M).

Employers and covered employees aren't taxed to fund the family leave and medical leave trust fund.  They are, however, required to pay a "contribution" to the fund.

begin quote
“Contributions”, the payments made by an employer, a covered business entity, an employee or a self-employed individual to the Family and Employment Security Trust Fund, as required by this chapter.
end quote

<sigh>

Although I were a engineer, I think I can still have a valid opinion wrt the twisting/warping of the English langauge.

April 16, 1969.  The launch of Apollo 11.  The first mission that Man walked on the moon.

Spin Zone / Cursive writing
« on: July 08, 2019, 05:07:21 AM »
while reading an article about cursive writing being a generational divide, I'm wondering how teenagers and young adults write checks?

Do they even use a checkbook anymore?

Spin Zone / reading old threads...
« on: July 07, 2019, 09:53:24 AM »
I was perusing old threads and noted one thread were a poster was adamant that cellphones shouldn't be allowed to work in moving vehicles.  He (she?) didn't seem to understand that there are many valid uses of a cellphone in a moving vehicle (e.g., passengers).

I find it strange that a forum with, presumably, many instrument-rated pilots, so many posters don't understand how people can multi-task.

oh, btw, if you were to look at the NHTSA data for motor vehicle accident rates, and compare accident rates from the time before cellphone to the accident rates once cellphones became ubiquitous, you might be surprised to see that the accident rates remained constant (or dipped slightly) over that time period.

Spin Zone / Have a great 4th of July... but fireworks are bad?
« on: July 04, 2019, 03:53:44 AM »
https://www.nraila.org/articles/20190703/bloomberg-s-killjoys-target-fourth-of-july-fireworks

"On July 1, the gun control group [bloomberg] tweeted out an image with the message 'Consider gun violence survivors on the Fourth of July.' The image was accompanied by a further message that stated,

Every day, an average of 100 Americans are fatally shot & hundreds more are shot and injured. If you’re planning to set off fireworks to celebrate the 4th, consider letting members of your community know so those who might be sensitive to loud noises can prepare themselves."

Spin Zone / POA outdone by ravelry.com
« on: July 01, 2019, 05:55:41 AM »
According to an op-ed piece in today's Boston Herald (Michelle Malkin), the ravelry.com operators have declared "every right-winger on the fiber arts forum who supports our commander in chief[sic] is really just a KKK domestic terrorist".  Any support of Donald Trump is banned, even projects or patterns that are deemed to support him in any way.

yet another example of how the left wing have gone over the top.

Spin Zone / When will we go back?
« on: June 29, 2019, 03:06:28 PM »
As we approach the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, it's been over 47 years since we've been to the moon.

Will we, as a nation, ever go back?  Does the gimme-gimme-gimme generation of today have the vision to look to the stars?  Have we lost the will to explore?

Of the 12 men who walked on the moon, we've lost 8 of them.

Will any of us who remember Apollo 11 get to see us return to the moon or go to Mars?

Spin Zone / Single-payer
« on: June 20, 2019, 07:37:50 AM »

Single-payer and "free" health-care is all the rage among the far-left.

I can't help but wonder how the far-left would feel about single-payer education.  No more elite schools, one set of rules for everyone, one set of standards for everyone.

Would paying a "professor" $300,000 to teach one course fit in the whole single-payer education system?

Sauce for the goose....

Spin Zone / Is there a word for this?
« on: March 23, 2017, 01:56:52 PM »
We have "trolling"

We have "punk'd"

Is there a word for the people who are victims of reacting to tweets like Pavlov's dogs?  Most recent examples are the reaction of liberals suffering from TDS whenever Donald Trump tweets, especially now that he is President Trump.

Spin Zone / hypothetical health care/insurance
« on: March 18, 2017, 04:11:56 PM »
Yesterday I watched a bit on the news about a new cholesterol treatment that is apparently extremely effective at reducing LDL levels into the low double-digits.  With the low LDL levels, the risks of stroke and heart disease is predicted to be significantly reduced.

Note that the projected cost of the drug is $14,000 per year.

For now, let's ignore why the drug is that expensive.

My single-person health insurance costs about $9,000 per year.

A preventative treatment for a relatively common health problem costing more than current insurance plan rates.  Hmmmm, what are the possibly results?

Even more common is the risk of the elderly developing Alzheimer's.  What do we do if the miracle occurs and a cure for Alzheimer's is developed but it costs $50,000 per year?
