Spin Zone / Blood donations and COVID-19
« on: May 08, 2020, 04:52:21 AM »
Interesting.

https://www.redcrossblood.org/faq.html#donating-blood-coronavirus--covid-19-

There is no test to screen blood donations for the coronavirus and other respiratory viruses. It’s important to emphasize that there are no data or evidence that this coronavirus can be transmitted by blood transfusions, and there have been no reported cases of transfusion transmission for any respiratory virus including this coronavirus worldwide.

Spin Zone / Hey - some really awesome news
« on: May 08, 2020, 04:41:21 AM »
This is so huge.

In Massachusetts, the gov has seen fit to let golf courses open.

Just wonderful!  what a relief... finally some good news and progress toward "getting back to the a new normal" (the gov's words, not mine)

(disclosure, I don't golf and you'd have to put a gun to my head to make me watch golf on TV)

(is it really necessary that I put some of the above in green font?)

Spin Zone / Past Pandemics
« on: May 06, 2020, 11:53:06 AM »

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/pandemic-timeline-1930-and-beyond.htm

Notice how there was no national shutdown during any of these previous pandemics.

1957-1958 Pandemic (H2N2 virus) - 116,000 deaths in the United States, no shutdown

1968 Pandemic (H3N2 virus) - 100,000 US deaths and no shutdown.  Indeed, we sent men to the Moon multiple times (Apollo 8 and Apollo 10)

The 2009 H1N1 Pandemic: A New Flu Virus Emerges - more than 60 million cases in the US, 12,469 deaths, no shutdown

now, we have COVID-19, BOO!!!

Spin Zone / face covering vs masks
« on: May 06, 2020, 07:01:16 AM »
Massachusetts now has an Order requiring people to wear face coverings in public (not just when you are unable to social distance).

The Order "strongly discourages" the use of medical-grade masks to meet the requirements of the Order.

In other words, a piece of cheesecloth would suffice.

God forbid anyone uses any common sense.

Spin Zone / This will make some people lose their minds...
« on: May 06, 2020, 06:26:33 AM »
(or is it "loose"?)

Anyway, Mass Eye and Ear and MGH are studying a gene-based coronavirus vaccine.

Think about all the people that are violently opposed to GMO.  What will they do if this gene-based coronavirus vaccine becomes available?

Another related thought:  will the Government mandate coronavirus vaccinations?

Spin Zone / Traffic fatalities
« on: May 05, 2020, 04:13:06 PM »
In Massachusetts, April 2020 had 29 vehicle fatalities compared with 28 in April 2019.

Traffic is down 50% from last year and we had basically the same number of fatalities.  It would have been nice to see traffic accidents and fatalities drop off with such a large drop in traffic.

Tickets for speeding are way up from last year.  People are definitely taking advantage of the lighter traffic densities to zoom around Boston and the highways.

Spin Zone / The new normal
« on: May 05, 2020, 04:09:15 PM »
(sorry, I know that at least a few people don't like the phrase, but I couldn't think of a clever or catchy alternative...)

Will there be acceptance of COVID-19 deaths like there is acceptance of influenza deaths?

Will all employment/jobs in a State need to be approved, either by the Governor's office or the State's Board of Health?

Will people pay more for domestically made products or will they go back to buying the cheap crap from mainland China?

Will PPE be stockpiled for the next pandemic or will we continue to use the entire production capacity just meeting current needs?

Will Nursing homes, etc be a place the elderly go to be left alone to die?

Will religious organization only be able to meet online?  (think about the (in)security implications...)

Will we ever see sufficient quantities of TP, pasta, frozen veggies, canned goods, hand sanitizer on the store shelves?

Spin Zone / Stupid headlines
« on: May 05, 2020, 05:46:28 AM »
The sad part was I didn't even have to turn the page to see these three...

"Coronvirus fight makes us new Greatest Generation"  - oh what a clueless ignorant moroon.

"Minorities bear brunt of inequality, COVID-19 and hate" - oh jeez, who knew COVID-19 targeted minorities...

"Revelations make case against Michael Fylnn look weaker" - "weaker", quite the understatement there bozo.

Spin Zone / good for COSTCO
« on: May 05, 2020, 05:42:56 AM »
I don't shop there but kudos for COSTCO refusing refunds on TP, paper towels, sanitzing wipes, water, rice, and Lysol.

All you f'n hoarders can choke on your 100-year supply of TP.

Spin Zone / sad commentary
« on: May 05, 2020, 05:36:14 AM »
In today's paper (5/5/20) I noticed a front-page picture of protesters demanding an end to the shutdown.  What I noticed was that there were no nazi flags, there was diversity of people.  I especially liked the subtle inclusion of a guy whereing a t-shirt that had "make liberals gry again".

Then I realized it should not be noteworthy when a newspaper doesn't print misleading pictures.

Spin Zone / What this means...
« on: May 01, 2020, 10:52:55 AM »
We've heard many times that many people who test positive never show any symptoms but are still able to spread COVID-19.

What we never hear, no one ever mentions, that it also means that being infected with COVID-19 doesn't always result in any illness.  In fact, many many people have COVID-19 and don't get sick.  Many more people will get COVID-19 and never get sick.  And most of the people who get sick only suffer mild symptoms.

We only hear about deaths, contagions, dire consequences.

I can't respect or trust people who only talk about how we are all going to die and who refuse to acknowledge how low the CFR is.

Spin Zone / When will something like this make the news?
« on: May 01, 2020, 10:34:09 AM »
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ shows some metrics like the attached.

Notice that of the active cases worldwide, 2% are in serious or critical condition.  Several weeks ago, that percentage was 5%, then 4%, recently 3%, and now has fallen to 2%.

And wrt the closed cases, the percentage of deaths has also fallen.

Could any of that be considered good news?

Spin Zone / facial recognition vs face coverings
« on: May 01, 2020, 05:41:44 AM »
One positive about all the COVID-19 hysteria.  Facial recognition software is probably going to be completely screwed up by people wearing face coverings.

Spin Zone / COVID-19 impact on mental health?
« on: April 30, 2020, 10:02:21 AM »

https://www.kff.org/health-reform/issue-brief/the-implications-of-covid-19-for-mental-health-and-substance-use/

"In a recent KFF poll, nearly half (45%) of adults in the United States reported that their mental health has been negatively impacted due to worry and stress over the virus. "

Gee, do you think the people that have incited the fear and panic will celebrate their success or even acknowledge their role?

(Of course, I suspect about the same number of people will claim that their mental health was negatively impacted by the election of Donald Trump)
